chapter twenty-three

“What were you two talking about so intently?” Runa asked, as Avril went over to join her. The meeting was about to start, and she felt flushed and agitated after the cryptic conversation with Echo.

She mustn’t overreact. Echo was probably just feeling her out. Rook’s suspicions must be rubbing off on him, and as a result, he was subtly questioning her, seeing if there were any cracks in her armor.

So why did it feel like he was playing mind games with her?

“Oh, he’s decided my new name will be Freyja.”

“Nice,” Runa said with a nod of agreement. “It suits you.”

“Thanks.”

She leaned forward, a smile tugging at her lips. “He likes you, you know.”

A chill shimmied down her spine. “Who? Echo?”

“Yes, Echo.” She broke into a cheeky grin and in that moment looked much younger than her twenty-four years. “He didn’t pay this much attention to me when I first joined, and I see the way he looks at you. It’s like he can’t tear his gaze away.”

“He’s just very intense.”

It probably hadn’t helped that she’d admitted she wanted to get to know him better. But she’d been caught on the spot and had to think fast. Being attracted to him was the first thing that had popped into her head. It had worked, but had she cultivated an unhealthy interest?

“Mm-hm,” Runa murmured, her gaze lingering on Echo. “He is kind of sexy, though. Isn’t he?”

Avril didn’t reply.

Unnerving. Disconcerting. But sexy? She wasn’t sure about that.

Echo and a man who she guessed was Thor stood in front of everyone. Using a pen, Echo tapped dully on the neck of his beer bottle, garnering everyone’s attention. Avril noticed the bottle was still full.

“Can we have everyone’s attention please?” All eyes turned his way. Looking around the stuffy room, Avril counted fifteen members, across both cells. A joint task force, so to speak.

Echo introduced himself and then Thor, who—like his namesake—was a hulking giant of a man with jet-black hair and deep-set eyes that never stopped moving. He looked like he could crush skulls with his bare hands, in addition to summoning bolts of lightning from the sky.

You’d think Echo would look geeky beside a man of that size, but when he spoke, he commanded the room with ease. Immediately the murmuring stopped. It was his stillness, Avril decided, that was most captivating. Along with the fiery gaze behind those unusual spectacles.

In a standoff, she’d rather face Thor than Echo.

Echo let the silence stretch before he spoke again. It was deliberate. He knew how to control a room, how to make people lean in, waiting for his words.

“Welcome to tonight’s meeting. I hope you’ve had a chance to get to know each other. If not, you will afterwards.”

Nobody moved.

“I’ll get straight to the point. As you’ve all been made aware, our target is Nordic Energy.”

Avril could sense the hunger in the room. All eyes were fixed on Echo.

“We’re going to bring them to their knees.” Echo’s gaze flicked around the room, assessing his audience, judging their reactions.
